NURSING ASSISTANT:

FUNCTION: Gives direct nursing care to resident under the direct supervision of professional nurses.

QUALIFICATION:

1. PREFERABLE HAS A HIGH SCHOOL EDUCATION OR EQUIVALENT.

2. INTERESTED IN WORKING WITH THE GERIATRIC AND REHABILITATION PATIENTS.

3. MUST DEMONSTRATE DEXTERITY IN THE BASIC SKILLS INVOLVED IN NURSING CARE.

4. MUST EXHIBIT A WILLINGNESS TO HEAR CONSTRUCTIVE CRITICISM AND TO LEARN NEW SKILLS.

5. ARE REQUIRED TO FOLLOW ESTABLISHED PROCEDURES IN PERFORMING TASKS WHICH WILL ASSURE THE RESIDENTS THE HIGHEST LEVEL OF CARE.

6. MUST DEMONSTRATE AN UNDERSTANDING OF SKILLS AND A DESIRE TO IMPROVE AS EXHIBITED BY THE ATTENDANCE OF STAFF EDUCATION PROGRAMS.

7. MUST BE GENUINELY INTERESTED IN THE WELFARE OF THE RESIDENT AND BE AWARE OF THE TEAM APPROACH TO RESIDENT CARE.

8. MUST BE EITHER STATE CERTIFIED AT THE TIME OF EMPLOYMENT OR REGULARLY ATTEND CLASSES AND COMPLETE CERTIFICATION WITHIN THE GUIDELINES SET BY THE STATE OF CALIFORNIA.

RESPONSIBILITIES:

I. PERFORMS RESIDENT CARE UNDER THE SUPERVISION OF THE PROFESSIONAL NURSE.
A. GIVE ROUTINE DAILY CARE INCLUDING BATHS, SITZ BATH, ORAL HYGIENE, PERINEAL AND SKIN CARE.

B. GROOMS RESIDENT’S HAIR, NAILS AND SHAVES RESIDENT WHEN INDICATED.

C. POSITIONS, AMBULATES AND TRANSPORTS RESIDENTS AS DIRECTED.

D. PREPARES RESIDENTS FOR MEALS, ASSISTS AND FEEDS RESIDENTS WHEN NECESSARY.

E. KEEPS RESIDENTS CLEAN AND DRY AT ALL TIMES.

2. ASSISTS WITH RESIDENT’S ADMISSION, TRANSFER AND DISCHARGE

3. ASSISTS WITH AND PERFORMS TREATMENTS AS DIRECTED.

A. APPLIES RESTRAINTS/POSTURAL SUPPORTS IN THE PROPER MANNER ON RESIDENTS AS INDICATED.

B. PERFORMS RANGE OF MOTION EXERCISES.

C. APPLIES ICE PACK, SHEEPSKINS, FLOTATION PADS, AIR MATTRESSES, EGGCRATE MATTRESSES, ETC.

D. TAKE AND RECORDS ACCURATE VITAL SIGNS AND INTAKE AND OUTPUT AS INSTRUCTED.

E. COLLECTS AND TESTS SPECIMENS AS INSTRUCTED.

F. PERFORMS COLOSTOMY CARE AS DIRECTED.

4. PROVIDES A CLEAN, SAFE AND COMFORTABLE ENVIRONMENT

A. ADJUSTS BED POSITION, SIDE RAILS, AND CALL LIGHTS FOR RESIDENT’S CONVENIENCE AND SAFETY.

B. GIVES AND REMOVES BEDPAN, URINAL, EMESIS BASIN, KEEPS THESE UTENSILS CLEAN AND STORES THEM IN PROPER PLACE.

5. OBSERVES AND REPORTS RESIDENT CONDITION.

A. MAKES FREQUENT ROUNDS ON ASSIGNED RESIDENTS, OBSERVING CONDITION AND ENVIRONMENT.

B. ANSWERS ALL (NOT JUST ASSIGNED RESIDENTS) CALL LIGHTS PROMPTLY.

C. CHARTS RESIDENTS DAILY ACTIVITIES AND CARE AS OUTLINED IN FACILITY PROCEDURES.

D. PARTICIPATES IN RESIDENT CARE CONFERENCES WHEN SO REQUESTED.

6. MAINTAIN UPKEEP AND CLEANLINESS OF EQUIPMENT AND NURSING UNIT.

A. USES EQUIPMENT ACCORDING TO POLICY AND PROCEDURE.

B. REPORTS NEEDED REPAIRS OF EQUIPMENT.

C. ACCOUNTS FOR CHARGEABLE ITEMS USE.

7. ASSISTS IN INFECTION CONTROL BY LEARNING AND FOLLOWING PROPER ISOLATION TECHNIQUES ACCORDING TO HOSPITAL POLICY AND PRACTICES HANDWASHING PROCEDURES.

8. IS FAMILIAR WITH EMERGENCY AND DISASTER PROCEDURES AND POLICIES BY CONTINUING REVIEW OF BOTH.

9. ATTENDS AND PARTICIPATES IN EDUCATIONAL MEETINGS FOR PERSONAL GROWTH AND DEVELOPMENT.

10. ATTITUDE

A. DEMONSTRATES A POSITIVE WORKING ATTITUDE WHICH FACILITATES TEAM WORK AND STAFF MORALE.

B. EXHIBITS INITIATIVE IN RESPONSE TO RESIDENT CARE AND MAINTAINING DEPARTMENTAL FUNCTIONS.

ACCOUNTABILITY

A. REPORTS ANY INFORMATION AFFECTING RESIDENT CARE TO THE CHARGE NURSE, THE SURPERVISOR AND/OR THE DIRECTOR OF NURSING SERVICES.
